groundwater

« Back to Glossary Index

The water beneath the surface of the ground, consisting largely of surface water that has seeped down through pores or cracks, and can be found as moisture, or as an aquifer in sand, gravel, or cracked rock. Discharging groundwater sustains stream flow and supplies water to springs and wells.
